Don’t forget your why

When we are feeling burned out (happens to the best of us), it is almost ALWAYS not because of what we are doing, but WHY we are doing it.

So if you are feeling a bit burned out, run down, etc, take some time to reconnect with your purpose.

Why did you decide to do what you do?

Why did you even get out of bed this morning?

Whatever the answer. GRAB IT firm today.

That energy will propel you to a much brighter future!

Fuel your fire

It is all fuel.

The wonderfully amazing times.

The crippling negative ones.

Your current life up to know is fuel for your future.

Who you are now is a conglomeration of your entire past, and who you are now is fuel that will help you become who you want to be.

So remember, you can use whatever you are going though, positive or negative, as propulsion to get you to where you want to go.

Passion & Work Ethic

This is a great message from Simon Sinek. (If you haven’t signed up for his daily motivation service, check it out here.

I believe having a strong work ethic and having passion for what you “do” are both vitally important.

I also believe one can lead to the other.

Even if you are not passionate about your daily job right now, if you dive in to making sure you have a strong work ethic, if you are passionate about that alone, you more than likely will find enjoyment and things you CAN be passionate about daily.

It is also possible to be passionate about something (art, music, etc) but unless coupled with a strong work ethic in those endeavors, you will not achieve nor will you grow in those avenues.

You can CHOOSE your work ethic, so put some energy into that today.

Toxic positivity

I recently discovered the term “toxic positivity.”

Toxic positivity is the belief that no matter how dire or difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset. It’s a “good vibes only” approach. (Taken from http://www.verywellmind.com)

I choose to be positive, and I write about positivity not because I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but because I decide to realize the world is a beautiful place.

I whole-heartedly believe that when circumstances are awful, we should recognize that, allow ourselves to grieve, mourn, cry, get frustrated, angry and lash out some even.

It is always ok to not be ok.

However, I also believe that it is up to ourselves to change our situation for the future. It is up to us to learn from any challenge and apply it toward a growth mindset.

The only way positivity can be toxic is in the absence of empathy. If someone (even if it is yourself) is going through some horrible situations, I don’t believe we should talk to them (ourselves) about maintaining positivity without acknowledging THE SUCK of the situation. First and foremost, be kind, listen, hug, comfort.

Also realize that part of the comfort is the belief/faith that all things pass and life will move on and in fact can become better, eventually.

You matter more than you know

I read “The Five People You Meet In Heaven” by Mitch Albom last weekend. It was a great, quick, and impactful read.

The premise is that a man (who doesn’t think too highly of himself) dies and when he gets to heaven, he meets 5 people.

Some he expected to meet there.

Some he most certainly did not.

Each person’s life intertwined with the main character’s at some point in a way that was much more profound than he thought.

In the end, Eddie (the main character), looks back and realizes his life impacted so many more people than he could fathom.

We are all connected, in some way. And what we do (our actions, our jobs, our attitudes, who we are) affects A LOT of other people.

The great news is that when you DECIDE to lean more toward the positive, you infect others with that positivity.

When you try to look at solutions rather than focus on the problems, others will do the same.

When you smile at a stranger, more than likely they smile back (and then they pass it on).

When you are INTENTIONAL about living your best self, you cannot help but make the world a bit better as well.

Which reminds me of one of my favorite pieces of writing by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

UKNOWN IMPACT

Thank you to Jessica, my amazing office manager for sharing this today.

The truth is you NEVER know how much of an impact you make on someone’s life.

Another truth: usually the little things make a much BIGGER impact than you think they will.

Don’t for a second, make the grave mistake of thinking that the little things you can do for others will not add up to a larger impact.

Your smile, your kind words, your compassion MATTER WAAAAAAAY more than you will ever measure.

Listen to improve

I love what Jon Gordon is conveying here.

I believe, too often, we (myself included) have a tendency to listen to others in order to respond.

We really should listen to learn.

It is harder than it sounds.

In order to listen to learn, we must be connected, intentionally hearing what others have to say. We must also silence our thoughts as they naturally attempt to formulate a rebuttal or an application to ourselves.

When we truly “lend an ear” to those we are with, we grow in compassion, connection and improve.

You cannot be too big to do the small things…

A little tongue-in-cheek but the message rings true.

If you have big dreams and aspire to accomplish a lot, you most definitely need to pay attention to how you do the “little things.”

In fact, the path toward a huge success is over with hundreds/thousands of small steps.

And if you can’t devote attention, drive and passion to the little steps, the big success will always remain just a dream.

Get busy on the little things today 🙂

Today…

I Read this today: “No matter what, you’ll never get today back”.
Truth.

But I also think we can read that and think “we better make today amazing” and that’s not the best policy either.

I think the key is to know today whether an amazing day at work or a mediocre one at best, a day of sunshine, birds singing or stormy and cold. Today cannot be saved.

It must be savored.

So the best policy is to be fully IN it today. Be present, appreciate today for being today. Connect with others, give and receive some love and appreciate the fact that today is finite.

You will never get today back.

Together we rise

“One person in pursuit of excellence raises the standards of everyone around them.”

So step one: be that 1 person today.

March toward a better future by putting effort in today.

That effort should be rooted in your soul, and your passion and purpose are the much needed nourishment.

When you can connect those with your desire to improve, even just a little bit, each day, the you are unstoppable.

When you do that, you help everyone around you, including me 🙂
