The great divide

The divide is real.

One huge thing I dislike about elections (especially this one) is the way they tend to AMPLIFY our differences and erode our common ground.

I truly believe we should all support who we want to support.

We should back ballot measures that align with our personal philosophies for our lives, our families, our communities and our futures.

What I dislike is the way that people can stand on their “side of the voting line” and cut off the other side completely.

We are entitled to our views and we are allowed to express those views.

It is disheartening that those views can break friendships, end conversations and erode our peace.

No matter where you put your stake into the ground on the issues, realize we all share that ground, even if where I plant my stake is far removed from where you plant yours.

I am hopeful, that regardless of the voting results, we can start focusing on the commonalities we all share and work toward lessening the divide between humanity rather than increasing it.

Fulfillment

“Fulfillment is not born of the dream. Fulfillment is born of the journey.”-Simon Sinek

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating.

The journey is more important and more fulfilling than the destination.

Our goals surely matter.

But the processes of achieving them: the “grind”, carries more weight.

If we don’t love the journey (even the hard parts), we will not be fulfilled at the finish line.

The struggle is where progress is born and that progress leads to success.

Do what you love and love doing it with each step.

Don’t make the (all-too-common) mistake of thinking you’ll be happy when you “get there.”

Be happy now.

Enjoy the process.

The goal is but a stepping stone on the journey.

Find your fulfillment in what you do today!

Heal thy self

I saw this on a message from Elephant Journal. It kid of gave me pause.

So true we should not seek help from those who continue to hurt us.

The same goes for ourselves.

If we feel we let ourselves down, we need to push forward from the perspective of whom we want to grow to be.

We cannot create new, positive habits with the same negative thinking that created our old, bad habits.

We need to fathom our future from the perspective of our improved, future selves.

As Coach Klein said in The Waterboy with Adam Sandler: “visualize and attack.”

Picture whom you want to be and then work on doing things to get yourself there.

Have to? Or GET TO?

Jon Gordon has discussed this topic quite a few times on stage and in his books.

How many times do you think (especially on Monday’s) about what you “have to” do today?

“I have to go to work.”

“I have to take out the trash.”

“I have to pay that bill.”

“I have to unsubscribe from the free paper towels Monday email service. I still have no idea how they got my email…”

If you took the time and wrote out all the times you think about what you “have to” do, the list would be staggering.

If we could reframe those thoughts into “get to”, just replace one word, our world seems brighter.

You see, there are thousands of people who would love to GET TO do what you HAVE TI DO.

You have to go to work? Tons of people are out of jobs right now.

You have to take out the trash? A lot of people are homeless and don’t have a trash can to take out.

You have to unsubscribe from stupid junk emails? The world is full of people who don’t even own a computer.

And from another angle, everything we think we have to do, actually helps us somehow in our own lives.

So today, each time you think of something you have to do, spend twice the time thinking of how blessed you are to get to do it, and how whatever it is will actually help you in the long run.

Get to it this Monday 🙂

Focus and connect, leave your mark

There is a misconception that multitasking is a good thing.

Research shows when we attempt to multi task we do all of those tasks at about 33% efficiency.

This doesn’t just apply to work.

When we are with our family, talking with a friend or etc, our minds are prone to wander and we lose our focus.

We don’t listen whole-heartedly, and we don’t connect fully.

People may never remember what you tell them but they will always remember how you made them feel.

When you are focused and connected, rather than wandering and “multi tasking” you will ensure they fee listened to and appreciated.

So focus people! And focus ON the person in front of you 🙂

The path to excellence?

It’s the manner in which you try to achieve your potential that defines you as a champion, not medals, titles or accolades.

Stop should-ing all over yourself

I heard something great in church this weekend.

“We need to stop should-ing 💩 all over ourselves!”

I loved it!

If you are exercising, reading, eating well, in a relationship, etc, because you feel you “should” be….stop!

Guilt is a repressor, not a motivator.

Instead, find reasons why you WANT to do those things. If you want to do them to form a brighter future, for instance, latch on to that, and let go of the “should.”

Getting uncomfortable to be comfy

I’m sure we’ve all heard a variation of the above. The thought/truth that growth requires stepping out of ones comfort zone.

In all things. In order to grow we need to be willing to stretch.

And if you’ve ever taken the time to stretch your hamstrings, you know the beginning isn’t what one would call “comfortable.”

But in order for that all-important muscle to lengthen, we need to sit through some of that discomfort.

The same holds true for life. Growing as a person, making an upward move in your job, learning to be a better parent, Doctor or pastry chef requires stepping out from what we know now in order to become what we can be.
